Bulgaria has the best policy with almost 59 weeks of paid leave. The International Labour Organization says that protecting expectant and nursing mothers from job discrimination is “a precondition for achieving genuine equality of opportunity,” yet workplace discrimination against mothers in the U.S. is rampant—from getting paid less than men to having a job offer rescinded because of a pregnancy.

The first year and a half of my son’s life, I was a work-at-home mom, known as a WAHM. I thought it was the best way to have everything I wanted—a career as a freelance writer, a child, flexibility—but it took an immense emotional and physical toll on me. Our culture prides working from home as the holy grail of job arrangements. But doing it with a newborn, my vision was blurred from exhaustion. Last week I saw a graphic which was similar to this one and simply indicated how much time a digital CEO should be dedicated to content consumption vs. creation. I guess my version is a bit more extreme than the one that I saw but the message is clear: as a digital entrepreneur you have to make sure that most of your time consists of creation instead of consumption. And I must admit that this is harder than it might sound. Every day I come across tons of really great content which I want to properly save to come back to it later. For example, I subscribe to lots of newsletters and receive tons of free pdf downloads which I love because I always think that I get delivered value which I can use for my own blog postings, videos or workshops. But the problem is that this information has no end. I could scroll through the internet for decades and would still find content that seems awesome and really necessary.
Should you quit your job to be a stay-at-home mom? The main reason I feel so guilty for working when I could be parenting is that my child is right there. I know when he is misbehaving in another room and boy do I want to intervene. But I am supposed to be at work, so I try as hard as I can to resist the urge. However, this dereliction of maternal duty often makes me feel terrible.
