My father ran a business from an office next to my bedroom when I was growing up. I remember thinking how “cool” that was. He never missed an event. He coached softball. He would come and go as he pleased. He prepared meals in the middle of the day. I thought my life would be like that, and it kind of is—but it’s not. On the plus side, I can tell you that parenting skills really do get better with practice—and that’s great for people of both sexes. I think our cultural expectations that women are the “nurturers” and men are the “providers” needs to evolve.
